I’m was very conflicted about this book. It’s a mindfuck, that’s a given, as per Reisz’s unique style, but it’s more. It’s fantastical in a subtle way, it’s kinky in a very not subtle way, it’s blunt and explicit and extremely well written.
Mona’s art gallery, The Red, which she inherited from her mother and promised to do “everything in her power” to save and keep, is going under. Fast. But then a mysterious, handsome stranger shows up after closing and makes her an offer she can’t (I mean, I guess she can) refuse. A night of kinky passion once a month or so for a year, and he’ll make sure the gallery is saved.
Malcolm promises not to hurt her, while throughout the year she might hate him, he promises she’ll enjoy herself, but mostly that he’ll enjoy those nights.
He promises her she’ll never see him again after their year is done, he promises her his child. He promises her a lot. And he keeps every single one of his promises.
I’ll admit, some of the (extremely, insanely, explicit to the point of blushing) smutty scenes, I skimmed. But mainly because I genuinely enjoyed the art descriptions, how they paralleled Mona’s adventures (not sure I know of a better word for her and Malcolm’s interludes).
I’m still pissed there was no explanation for how things happened, but I guess that’s part of the charm of the story.
If you’re a kink lover, if you’re an art lover, if you’re a Tiffany Reisz lover and if you enjoy a dollop of mystery and fantasy in your erotica – The Red is right up your alley.
Mona Lisa St. James made a deathbed promise that she would do anything to save her mother’s art gallery. Unfortunately, not only is The Red painted red, but it’s in the red. She soon realizes she has no choice but to sell it.
Just as she realizes she has no choice but to sell it, a mysterious man comes in after closing time and makes her an offer: He will save The Red if she agrees to submit to him for the period of one year.
The man is handsome, English, and terribly tempting…but surely her mother didn’t mean for Mona to sell herself to a stranger. Then again, she did promise to do anything to save The Red…
The Red is a standalone novel of erotic fantasy from Tiffany Reisz, international bestselling author of The Bourbon Thief and the Original Sinners series.
