I can’t believe I’m writing this review. This is book 9 in the Beyond series, and it’s semi-breaking my heart to be typing.
The war is here and it’s crunch time!! This map might help you visualize some of the scenes.
Yes. This is essentially Nessa and Ryder’s story. And for some reason I feel like this is the most emotionally charged book of them all. I love them both, how vulnerable they are, how instantly attracted they are to each other, but not necessarily physically.
In Beyond Surrender we learn a lot about Nessa’s past. Her deep connection to Dallas, her fascination with liquor, and the roots of her talent. We get more of what drives her, what her passions are and how they coincide with her deep love for each of the O’Kanes. We learn she’s a dreamer. And we learn what it is about Ryder that’s so appealing to her.
As for him – Michael Ryder’s cards are unfolding as each page is turned reading. He’s turning out to be more than we learned so far. More than Jim Jernigan’s heir, more than Sector 5 or 8 (now that Jim’s dead) ruler, more than a soldier. Yes, he’s been groomed his whole life as preparation for the war. He’s known nothing else, cared for nothing else than winning the war. To the point where he makes no plans for after…
It’s a brutal war. There are lives lost. Important lives in their inner circle, in their support system, in their friendships. This war that is the product of the infestation that is the council in Eden, the corrupt councilmen – one man in particular – is about to end, even with all the conniving moves, because of all the conniving moves and for the welfare of the people of Eden, but mostly for the people of the sectors.
In the midst of this war, the manipulations and the calculated fights – Nessa and Ryder fall in love so deeply. To me it felt like their souls fell in love even before the first insanely hot and sexy sex scene. From there it was all a whirlwind of battle and fucking.
The clever duo that is Kit Rocha are planning a spin off series for Sector One. And they managed to cleverly leave clues and open plot threads that have me basically at the edge of my seat wanting the first book in that series. Now.
I take comfort in the fact that when I want a series to dive into, one that is steamy, clever, emotional and tactical, but mostly freakishly steamy and hot – I have these 9 novels and several novellas to turn to.
She’s the heart of O’Kane liquor.
For years, Nessa has been focused on work. She keeps the whiskey—and the money—flowing, and life is sweet. Sure, she’s tired of being everyone’s baby sister, and she longs for a man who can stand up to her overprotective O’Kane brothers. But she never thought she’d meet him in the middle of a war.
He’s the brains of the revolution.
War is all Ryder knows. He was raised with one goal: to ensure the sectors’ successful rebellion against Eden. His father and his mentor both died for freedom, and nothing will stop him from securing their legacies with victory. He doesn’t have time for distractions—especially beautiful, impulsive ones like Nessa.
Opposites don’t just attract, they combust. Together, Nessa and Ryder have a chance for something more than the lives they’ve always known. But this is war—deadly, bloody war—and the only way to happily-ever-after is straight through Eden.
