The Deepest Blue by Christina Lee

So we know I’m a sucker for Christina Lee’s writing. Her new direction towards M/M romance is becoming a fast favorite of mine. After Corey & Jude who inspired a new series that opened with  Vaughn & Smoke, we’re getting the 2nd Roadmap to your Heart novel featuring Dean and Callum.

Thanks, Christina, for the ARC.

I absolutely loved this story. I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite to date, of Christina’s M/M novels. That’s not to say I any-less-than-adored her first two M/M titles.

The Deepest Blue alludes to a sea/scuba setting, but you’ll be surprised at this one. It actually takes place on a hunting preserve.

Cassie asks her gay roommate, Dean, to escort her to a family wedding as her date, to get her family and ex-boyfriend off her back trying to set them up again. What not one of the characters involved in this story expect is a real romance developing.

Callum, Cassie’s big brother is as closeted as they come. He loves his family and the family business and feels so responsible to help and be there for them, he’s afraid to come out and possibly lose business ties in the community as well as customers. This, naturally, causes him to drift away from his family. Add to that a grief stricken father and his sense of responsibility for his epileptic youngest brother and you have one frustrated man.

Sad? Yup!

When Cassie shows up with Dean, all bets are off. Callum can’t, for the life of him, understand what in the gorgeous city boy grates his nerves. He’s frustrated and butts heads with Dean. To say this was like a mindfuck for Dean is an understatement. I kept imagining this:

Dean is incredibly confused. He is instantly attracted to Cassie’s beautiful redhead brother, but he’s sure Callum is straight. Cassie sharing about her relationship with her brother confuses him and he’s trying to understand why Callum is so brisk with him, and is trying to tread their conversations very carefully as to not offend him. Not to mention pretending to be Cassie’s date isn’t easy.

Then things change. And become hot and sexy as hell…

I was fascinated with the way Lee created Callum’s arc. The way he grows into a comfortable self in the story is just beautiful, and Dean woven into that process is fabulous.

Dean and Callum face several challenges, one of them is the simplest fact they live 2 states apart, and Dean’s career is tied with his current position at the university where he’s a research assistant, and Callum can’t just up and leave his family and the business. But as always, Lee doesn’t disappoint :D.

The Montgomery family has the most incredible dynamics;  they love fiercely and will do anything for each other, yet they each keep a certain part of themselves hidden. Billie, the youngest of the siblings is facing a challenge of his own, and another he isn’t sure how to deal with, until Dean shows up, becomes a good friend and an ally, and helps him.

It’s not a big surprise, but Christina Lee’s HEAs are the most beautiful thing, and this one, while far from a perfect schmaltzy one, is the best.

I’m not going to say another word, because the story is so much more, it’s absolutely a must read.

Rugged and conventional Callum Montgomery enjoys running Shady Pines hunting preserve, except for the secret that’s eating him alive. When his sister brings a date for a family wedding, he can’t stand the arrogant city slicker with the stick up his perfectly fine ass. He doesn’t understand his draw to Dean, who pushes his buttons at every turn, but he’d never dream of betraying his sibling over some lust fueled fantasy.

Handsome and conscientious Dean Abbott is a research assistant in his university’s biology lab. When his roommate, Cassie, begs him to be her pretend date in front of her meddling family, he begrudgingly agrees to help. He doesn’t anticipate being enchanted by the countryside, the colorful cast of characters, or her sexy and brooding straight brother.

When contempt turns to passion and leads to stolen moments in a sugar cane field, Callum can’t help longing for the kind of connection he believes he can never have. But not even the world’s most heart-melting kiss can bridge the vast philosophical differences between the men.

Dean’s return to his urban lifestyle leaves him restless, his mind continually wandering to the charming setting that spoke to something missing deep inside him. Because you can take the city boy out of the country but you can’t make him forget the intriguing man he left behind.

Mother, wife, reader, dreamer. Christina lives in the Midwest with her husband and son–her two favorite guys.

She’s addicted to lip gloss and salted caramel everything. She believes in true love and kissing, so writing romance novels has become a dream job.
